Fight Against the Ugly
I have been an admirer of Massimo Vignelli ever since I heard about him while studying Graphic Design some years ago (fuck, I’m old). I love his work and his passion when he talks about design.
Among his all-mighty quotes (you will find tons illustrating Medium articles), there’s one that I especially like:
“The life of a designer is a life of fight. Fight against the ugliness. Just like a doctor fights against disease. For us, the visual disease is what we have around, and what we try to do is cure it somehow with design”.
Lovely harsh. I like that. What I would add is the paradox of finding beauty in the ugly —which could be interesting for another thought. But getting back to Massimo’s quote, I personally think about fighting the ugly not only in visual terms, as he said, but in the functional too. Ugly is in the process of renewing your passport. Ugly is present in the way a town hall communicates with its citizens. Every industry has some ugly in it, and that’s what makes design become the ultimate skill. Forget about Sketch and Adobe for a second and read The Vignelli Canon.
